I generally use my yoga practice as a balance to other forms of exercise, such as in my work in dance, cycling or going to the gym. Although I do like a strong, sometimes fiery flow, I have recently been wanting to slow down the practice so I can really take time to breathe, stretch and have time to reflect on the sensations and experience of the practice.
Over the past few weeks, particularly as the nights draw in, I have been slowing down my flow classes to try and find flows that can work deeper with the body and give time for unlocking and releasing as well as time to focus on alignment and strength in some held postures. I often find that I am actually sweating and working just as much in faster classes – I hope that my students get as much benefit from them as I do my practice.
